Three relief organizations from China are on the ground doing what they can. The Red Cross, the national emergency medical team, and a hospital ship called the "Peace Ark" from the Chinese navy.

China’s emergency medical team got right down to work the first night they got into Abuyog.

Pitching tents was the first priority.

"We rushed here at night. We have to erect3 tents so we can serve disaster victims tomorrow." Ye Zhen with China Emergency Medical Team said.

The next morning, a make-shift hospital offering a range of medical services from orthopedics to ultra-sonic check-ups was started.

"There is a high probability of air-borne diseases. These need to be contained, otherwise there could be an epidemic4." Dr. Yan Jianping with China Emergency Medical Team said.

Health care had to come by in this remote town. The number of sick and injured is huge.

Added to the potential dangers is the threat of mosquito borne diseases such as dengue fever.

"The typhoon left many huge water puddles5 in the area. This has increased the number of mosquitoes." Ling Feng China Emergency Medical Team said.

And near the worst-hit region of Tacloban, the Chinese navy’s hospital ship the "Peace Ark" has already anchored off shore.

Rescue workers reached Tacloban using a boat, searching for critically-ill patients that need to be transferred to the ship.

This night, they received 5 of them.

"He had appendicitis6 and needed surgery. We also needed to operate for his whirlbone fracture." Dr. Liu Gang, Peace Ark’s specialist said.

Tacloban has become the center of medical help for the typhoon survivors7. But there’s only one public hospital, there’s a great need for more.

"We don’t have a time limit for this mission. As long as the Philippines needs it, we will do the best we can to help the disaster victims." Peace Ark director Shen Hao said.

This ship is specially8 modified to provide medical service carries 128 doctors and nurses and has 300 beds.
