Trainee⁵ teachers will need to pass tough new tests before being allowed into classrooms under Federal Government plans to be announced today. The reforms aim to improve teacher performance amid concerns over falling literacy and numeracy standards, as well as meeting new academic requirements. Aspiring⁶ teachers will also need to pass emotional intelligence and aptitude⁷ tests.

 

Brisbane police are investigating a suspected homicide.  A woman in her 20s was found in a house in Rochedale south last night. She was rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds to her head. She died a short time later. Police are calling for witnesses.

 

And up to 40 witnesses are expected to appear at a committal hearing for Brisbane man Gerard Baden Clay due to start today. He is accused of murdering his wife Allison and of interfering⁸ with her corpse⁹. He reported her missing last April, but was arrested  after her body was later found in a creek¹⁰.

 

And preparations are in full swing for the election of a new Pope in Rome this week. The famous Sistine Chapel¹¹ is being modified to accommodate a conclave¹² of 115 cardinals¹³ who'll begin the formal voting process tomorrow. The voting will continue until one of the cardinals receives a two-thirds majority.
