The former prime minister has issued a rallying call to his flattered colleagues. He's urging them not to accept the electoral defeat, lying down and to campaign their hearts out. Mr Rudd has dismissed suggestions he's partly to blame for the government's disastrous² polling. 

 

Prince Philip is back in hospital. Buckingham pilot says the queen's husband  has been admitted for an "exploratory" surgery following abdominal³ investigation⁴. He's expected to stay in hospital for up to two weeks.

 

Thousands of anti-government protesters are pouring into Istanbul's Taksim Square ahead of the prime minister's return from North Africa. They are continuing to call for his resignation. Earlier, Tayyip Erdogan vowed⁵ to push ahead with the redevelopment of an Istanbul park that sparked the week-long protest. He's also labelled some of the protesters extremists.

 

And we are remembering former swimming champion and Hollywood star Esther Williams who has died at the age of 91. Williams set multiple swimming records in her teens, but is best-known as the star of a series of  high greasing aqua-musicals which featured synchronized⁶ swimming and diving.
