Full coverage1: Diaoyu Islands: China’s Inherent Territory China’s Foreign Ministry2 has reiterated3 its opposition4 to the US-Japan joint5 statement, which said that the Security Treaty between them included the Diaoyu Islands. The islands are at the center of a territorial6 dispute between China and Japan. The Chinese Foreign ministry urged the US and Japan to respect differences and interests of other countries.
"The Diaoyu Islands are the inherent territory of China. The US-Japan Security Treaty was formed during the Cold War. It can’t change the fact that the Diaoyu Islands are an integral part of China. No matter what other people say and do, it is impossible to shake the determination of the Chinese government and people to safeguard the integrity of our territorial sovereignty and maritime7 rights and interests. We urge the US and Japan to give up the Cold War mentality8, and to respect the interests and concern of other countries in the region, in order not to disrupt peace and stability further." said Qin Gang, Spokesman, Chinese Foreign Ministry.
