改习语意思是：喉结，咽喉。此语出自《圣经》。根据《旧约·创世纪》第二章和第三章，上帝创造了人类始祖亚当和夏娃之后，让他们住在伊甸园里。夏娃受了魔鬼的诱惑，吃了善恶树上的果实，又让亚当也吃了，于是两人违背了上帝的禁令。有人根据此典故想像亚当在吃禁果时，有一块果肉哽于喉头前部，所以男人的喉结比女人的喉结明显，突出。因此喉结在英语中被早期的解剖学家称为“Adam's apple”.此语中的 apple 并非仅指苹果，许多果子都可以被称为apple.
