 Syrian president Bashar Assad is expected to easily win an election that's widely being denounced as a sham1. Thousands of Syrians are lining2 up in areas controlled by the Syrian government to vote in Syria's first multi-candidate election in more than 40 years. The vote is being held amid the civil war that's left more than 160,000 people dead.

Voting is not being held in rebel-controlled areas, which includes much of northern and eastern Syria. More than 2.7 million refugees who have fled Syria are either excluded or are refusing to vote.
