The Chinese phrase "xue ba", or study bully1, has become a buzzword in China, referring to students who are particularly good in school. Now, Beijing is welcoming a group of American "xue ba" for an educational exchange tour. We look at the experiences of these top American high school scholars here in the capital.

The USA President Awardee Students Delegation2 has arrived. The 12-member group plans to tour the capital, Xi'an and more, to interact with their Chinese peers and learn about Chinese culture.

"Hi my name is Anna Blake, I'm from New York City... I'm really interested in biology research...and I'm really excited to be here in China," Anna Blake, US high school student said.

Anna and her 11 partners have gotten offers from Harvard, Yale, Princeton and other famous American universities. She and another student have received the President of the United States scholar award this year.  No more than 141 of the awards are handed out annually3. Anna says she is very happy with her cultural experience so far.

"It was very interesting, cos we learn that the colours represent different things in China...and that was very interesting," Anna Blake said.

These American students are participating in various cultural experience courses, making new friends, and enriching their understanding of Chinese folklore4 and art.

"They may take our Chinese culture back to the US, back to each state - to their parents, their fellow students and their teachers, also their friends, to let them know what have they learned from this visit," Linda Wang, Director of China-US Outstanding Student Exchange Program said.

The 12 students will go to Xi 'an, Chengdu and Beichuan for more exchange visits.
