Concerns are growing over a lake that has formed due to the landslides1 from the earthquake. Called a barrier lake, it was formed after tonnes of earth fell into the Niulan river between the towns of Ludian and Qiaojia.
The lake is 500 meters long and about 100 meters wide. Water in the river has gone up 40 meters and is still rising, threatening residents living downstream. Those at risk have been evacuated2. Water and geography experts have arrived at the scene to deal with the crisis.
