Much of the quake impact was felt at the town of Ludian. The town and its surrounding areas have been prone¹ to earthquakes.

Within a 200-kilometer radius² of the quake center, 44 earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or above have been recorded in the past. The area is also relatively³ densely⁴ populated, registering 265 people per square kilometer.
