President Barack Obama is preparing for tonight's State of the Union address. The White House says he'll focus on policies to improve the lives of the middle class. Senate Republicans say a proposal to increase taxes on the wealthy is just a way to excite Democrats¹ ahead of the next election.

 

Boston police say a doctor was shot inside the prestigious² Brigham and Women's Hospital today. His wounds are life-threatening. Officers later found the suspected shooter in an exam room, dead from a self-inflicted wound.

 

The United Nations Secretary-General is calling for an immediate³ halt to fighting in Yemen. The Security Council held an emergency meeting Tuesday to discuss the situation. Violence has gripped Yemen's capital since Monday in what's been described as a rebel coup⁴.

 

And crowds gathered in Granite⁵ City in Illinois to witness the demolition⁶ of an old bridge. It was the first of 3 explosions needed to bring down the old chain of Rocks Canal Bridge. A new one was opened last year.
