The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating how live anthrax that's shipped from an army lab to over a dozen civilian⁴ facilities. NPR's * reports a number of people are now being treated as a precaution. 

 

 

The anthrax samples were supposed to be dead, but a lab in Maryland discovered late last week its shipment was still live. The CDC is now trying to figure out why the Army's Dugway Proving Ground in Utah shipped the live samples. Jason McDonald is the CDC spokesman. 

 

 

We have a team at the lab to determine, you know, what may have led to this incident. 

 

 

He says four lab workers in three states are being treated for potential anthrax exposure. The military says 21 individuals at an airbase in South Korea are also receiving treatment. So far, no body is actually gotten sick. *, NPR News, Washington. 

 

 

Former New York governor Gorge⁶ Pataki has announced his bid for president this morning in a video on its website and later in Exeter, New Hampshire. New Hampshire public radio Emily Corwin has more. 

 

 

The Exeter town hall was packed with perhaps as many New Yorkers as Granite⁷ Staters. The former governor spoke⁵ in bold statements that ranged from traditionally conservative to down-right populous⁸ slams against his potential future opponents. 

 

 

No one will be above the law, not even if you're a former secretary of state whose name happens to be Clinton. 

 

 

Pataki became governor of New York and an upset victory over Democrat⁹ Mario Cuomo in 1994. He was in office during September 11th and served three terms. For NPR News, I'm Emily Corwin in New Hampshire. 

 

 

As rains ease up in parts of Texas, many areas are still in danger of flooding. Officials say the Brazos river near floodwaters is lapping at the foundations of 11 homes in a northern Texas community and Parker County Emergency Management officials say the river is over its 21-foot flood level and is expected to crest¹⁰ at more than 24 feet tonight. Joret Rogers is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. 

 

 

Severe weather potential * across parts of west Texas and to western Oklahoma, western and central Kansas and parts of central Nebraska. 

 

 

Flash flood watches and warning are off parts of several states along with tornado¹¹ watches in the Central Plains. 

 

 

Wall Street closed lower by the bell today. The Dow down 36 points, stand at 18,126, Nasdaq down 8 points, stand at 5,097, the S&P 500 down 2.

In Los Angeles, prosecutors¹² say they have arrested a man allegedly starting a huge blaze that destroyed an unfinished department building and damaged a nearby office tower. The LA county district attorney's office says 56-year-old Dawud Abdulwali was charged today. Prosecutors say he started the December's fire that caused up to $80 million in damage. 

 

 

International soccer's governing body is in turmoil¹³ after a number of senior officials were arrested yesterday on US corruption¹⁴ charges. Larry Miller¹⁵ reports there is growing anger from sponsors, European politicians, and the European soccer association. 

 

 

British foreign secretary Phillip Hammond says something is deeply wrong at the heart of FIFA. 

 

 

International football needs to reform, needs to get its act together. 

 

 

There's a strong call to delay tomorrow's election for a FIFA president. Depp Blatter who is not one of those arrested will seek a 5th term. The French foreign minister calls for a postponement¹⁶, insisting it's important to establish exactly what's going on. UEFA, a European soccer ruling body, is a sharp critic of FIFA and Blatter. It's threatening to boycott¹⁷ the vote. The big money is also getting nervous. World Cup sponsors, Coca Cola, Adidas and Visa have expressed deep concern. Visa says without change, it will reassess its relationship with FIFA. For NPR News, I'm Larry Miller in London. 

 

 

The Pacific has its first named storm of the season. Tropical storm Andres has formed far off Mexico's coast, with maximum sustained winds at 45 mph. National Hurricane Center Miami it could become a hurricane by tomorrow, but it's not expected to be a threat to land.
