Good morning, everyone. Well stock markets in China have fallen again as government measures to halt slide in share prices appear to be failing. Chinese markets have lost nearly 30 percent of their value in the past three weeks. And many investors1 are worried by the fact that almost 1/4 of the listed companies have requested to suspend trading with their shares. This has been a move to protect these companies from further losses. And former Treasurer2, Peter Costello has commented on the financial turmoil3 in China, saying there's no need to panic just yet.
This is a big economy which grown for a long time. It's
merging4 into a free market system. Nobody is quiet sure how this is going to occur, there is going to be forwards, there is going to be reverses. And it's something we have to keep their eye on.
The Reserve Bank of Australia has also
shrugged5 off any
immediate6 danger to the Australian economy from the events in China or Greece. As is expected, the RBA left the official cash rate at a record low of 2 percent, but concerns about jobs market remain a critical test for lawmakers with official data due out tomorrow.
Let's check the global market. And Wall Street has seen some gains overnight. The Dow and S&P 500 were both up more than half a percent. The Nasdaq gained 0.1 percent. While in London, the Footsie was down 1.6 percent. Check commodity price. West Texas Crude is trading at 52 US dollars a barrel, Tapis Crude is at 58 US dollars a barrel, and gold is trading at 1156 US dollars an ounce. The Australian dollar is currently buying 74 US cents, 68 euro cents and 48 pence
sterling7.
