　　Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes set out to explore the emotional and sexual undertones of Holmes's character, to explain his addiction³, his misogyny, and give another insight into his relationship with Watson.

　　That film, it's a masterpiece, I think. It has an amazing bittersweet quality to it.

　　And even though Robert Stephens is a very florid, rather Oscar Wilde-like Holmes, and Colin Blakely funny as bones, you can imagine, they both play it so straight, as well as so funny, that by the time it gets to the desperately⁵ moving ending, you're completely with them, you know.

　　And in this scene, Wilder also wittily¹¹ probes Holmes's attitude to women, and his private vice¹².

　　It's cut down from several other cases to a sort of minor¹⁷ case about a Russian ballerina who wants Holmes to father her child, and then the main case about this spy and the Loch Ness monster.
