So I had a perfectly6 natural explanation for why, despite the best spyglasses, this boat had always been mistaken for a marine7 animal.

　　Near the middle of the platform, the skiff was half set in the ship's hull8, making a slight bulge9. Fore1 and aft stood two cupolas of moderate height, their sides slanting10 and partly inset with heavy biconvex glass, one reserved for the helmsman steering11 the Nautilus, the other for the brilliance12 of the powerful electric beacon13 lighting14 his way.
