Long ago, when the western part of the United States was still a wilderness¹, ayoung boy, called Kit², not yet twenty years old, went from his home in theEast to learn about the new country. He wanted to know what lay beyond theRocky Mountains.

Kit was always calm in times of danger. He was strong and brave. Most of theIndians liked and respected him for his honesty.
