It's May 1995, six months into the war between Russian forces and Chechen separatists. Fighting has been fierce, and have been heavy losses on both sides. The war had been triggered by the collapse1 of the Soviet2 Union and Chechen demands for independence. Not all Russians supported their Government's military campaign.
