In 1998 Indonesia was in real trouble. The country's economy had collapsed¹ amid the Asian financial crisis which had swept the region. Popular anger was directed at President Suharto, the hardline ruler of Indonesia, for more than 30 years. Protests though outlawed² were growing around the country. 

 

译文：

1998年，印度尼西亚陷入了大麻烦。亚洲金融危机席卷该区，其经济不堪其忧而崩溃。民众将愤怒的矛头直指总统苏哈托，他是印度尼西亚政治强人，统治印尼超过30年。虽然抗议被视作违法，但其势头在印尼各地却有增无减。
