Kate Hilpern was adopted as a baby by a British family. She knew very little about her birth parents. But when she reached adulthood1, she went to look for them. The news wasn't good. Kate found out that her mother had died in India, aged2 19, just over a year after giving birth. But the mystery about how she died led Kate on a quest to find out what had happened. Kate told me about the moment that she got hold of her birth certificate and first made contact with her maternal3 grandparents.
