Well, when an economy plunges1 into a downturn, we know you could expect unemployment to rise, businesses to struggle as demand falls and investment to drop. Now normally economists2 assume these effects will be reversed as the economy recovers, but it now seems the consequences of periods of economic stress can be with us for many years.
