The International
Monetary1 Fund is giving a bigger share of votes to Mexico, Turkey, South Korea, and especially China to account for the growing role their economies play in the world. The United States encouraged this change to give these countries a greater share in the IMF's occasional bailouts of countries in economic trouble—for example, Mexico's 1995 bailout. The United States also wants to see China play a more active role in monitoring of cash flows between member countries and to stop using their trade surplus currency reserves to keep the yuan valued artificially low. China's new share of the votes will be just over 3.7%; the United States has 17% of the voting shares, and the European Union has 23%.
