On Friday we bring you moments from StoryCorps , the oral history project that's travelling the country. It gives family and friends the chance to ask one another about their lives. Copies of the interviews are
archived at the Library of Congress.
Recently, Cinema Wood brought her grandmother to a StoryCorps booth. Peggy Edwards is 81 years old. Cinema Wood is 32. She wanted to capture her grandmother's voice on tape and get her advice about marriage. Cinema Wood asked her grandmother to tell the story of meeting "Papa", her grandfather G. Franklin Edwards. The year was 1946 and Peggy Edwards was working as a secretary at Howard University in Washington, D. C. Franklin was a graduate student.
That first day I started working this man came down and I was typing and he kept looking at me and looking at my legs and I was just
appalled2. I never had anybody just so
blatant3. We went together for six months, and then he was going back to Chicargo to finish work on his
doctorate4. He asked would I marry him and I said "yeah".
You guys had a long, / strong marriage . That's for sure.
Yeah, right. We were married / 52 years.
What kind of advice would you have for couples like me and Drew?
Be good , be
compassionate5, be kind to each other, go slow.
Go slow.
Yeah, it's not a marathon. It's a, just a stroll.
That's / good advice.
Yeah.
Thanks. (Yeah, yeah. )
So is there anything you 've never told me but you want to tell me?
No, I tell you all the time whenever I 'm talking to you I love you all. I just love you from the moment you were born. I looked down at you with those little shoulders. And I thought, "Oh, I was so happy".
I love you too, I'm really emotional now. This was fun.
I love you and I am so happy to have been able to come.
