Chinese President Xi Jinping is calling on Asian countries to promote unity1, cooperation, and the development of the continent.

He made the call at the ongoing2 fourth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia.

Over 20 international leaders, including 11 heads of state, are attending the summit in Shanghai, which run through today.

CICA member states are expected to issue a Shanghai Declaration on commitments to strengthening strategic coordination3.

At the meantime, China and Russia have issued a joint4 statement, vowing5 to beef up bilateral6 cooperation in a wide range of fields.

The statement follows a meeting between the presidents of the two nations at that summit in Shanghai.

The two leaders have also overseen7 the start of a joint military exercise in the East China Sea.

Although a much anticipated gas deal has not been finalized8 just yet, the two countries have vowed9 to deepen cooperation in the petroleum10 industry, kick-start Russia's supply of natural gas to China as soon as possible and jointly11 develop coal mines in Russia.
