US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he told Saudi Arabia's rulers that the US takes the disappearance1 of journalist Jamal Khashoggi "very seriously". The US also pulled out of a major Saudi investment conference amid global pressure. But President Donald Trump2 has cautioned against a rush to judgment3 against an important Mideast ally.

In Afghanistan, three top Kandahar province officials have been killed by their own guards in an attack at a security meeting that also wounded two US troops. A Taliban spokesman who claimed responsibility said the target was US general Scott Miller4, commander of US and NATO troops in Afghanistan.

In Arizona, crews rescued a man trapped in an old abandoned mine shaft5 after he fell down 100 feet on Monday. He was found on Wednesday by a man passing by the area who heard calls for help.

Firefighters rescued a pony6 that was found trapped in a storm drain in Houston on Wednesday. They sedated7 the pony before hoisting8 it out.
