Japan returned to recession in the third quarter. GDP contracted at an annualised rate of 0.8%, more than economists1 had feared,having shrunk by 0.7% in the second. The recession is the second since Shinzo Abe became prime minister in December 2012. Nominal2 GDP, which includes inflation and is Mr Abe’s new focus, was flat in the quarter, though it rose by 3.1% year-on-year.
