The broader market S&P 500 ended at a new record level for the second time in two days, as investors1 preferred to concentrate on brighter economic news, rather than the ongoing2 violence in Iraq, which has been pushing oil prices higher. The S&P 500 is now around 6% higher than it was at the beginning of the year. The Dow Jones index has put on more than 2% in the same time. On Thursday, the US Labor3 Department reported initial jobless claims fell by 6,000 last week. Traders also took a positive signal from the Conference Board's index of leading economic indicators4, which rose by 0.5% in May.
