Hawaii’s budget crunch1 is giving school children some reason to smile. (21) Public schools are gonna be closed most Fridays for the remainder of the academic year. Under a new union contract with teachers,it cuts 17 days from the calendar and gives Hawaii the nation’s shortest school year. Educators are concerned there is just not enough time for kids to learn. Lawmakers in Nebraska have approved a big change to the state’s controversial Safe Haven2 Law. Under the new measure,children older than 30 days can not be dropped off at state hospitals. 35 children, many of them,preteens or even teenagers, have been abandoned in hospitals since the original law took effect in July.
