Bureau of statistics figures show a 3.1% rise in building approvals in February.

That's defied economists⁴' estimates of a 2% increase.

The rise has been supported by the traditionally volatile⁵ apartment building sector⁶.

Elsewhere, the bureau's retail trade report shows spending was unchanged in February, missing forecasts of a 0.4% increase.

This comes after sales were unchanged in December and rose by only 0.3% in January.

The financial backers of troubled miner and steelmaker Arrium have rejected a $1 billion recapitalisation plan put forward by an American firm.

Arrium has sought a trading halt on the ASX until a further announcement can be made about its financial future.

The company had previously⁷ warned it would need to mothball the Whyalla steelworks without major changes to its finances, following a half-year loss of $236m.
