notable，noted¹

这一对形容词都有“著名的”、“知名的”含义，但词义有细微的差异，故使用场合有所不同。

Notable的意思是“显著的”或“值得注意的”（remarkable or deserving notice）。经常与它搭配使用的词有speaker、event、artist、performance、painter、law、affair、man、woman等。用作名词时，意为“名士”、“名物”。其同义形容词是conspicuous、striking或eminent²、renowned；其同义名词为celebrity。例：

There is a notable（conspicuous）scar on his upper lip．

他的上唇有一个很显眼的伤疤。

Mr．Song is a notable（＝an eminent person）．

宋先生是个知名人士。

Noted是个中性词，既可用于好的意味指著名的（renowned），如：noted musician、noted doctor、noted actor、noted statesman；也可用于坏的意味指恶名昭著的（notorious），如：noted tyrant、noted bandit。从下列一个例句中，便可看出它所指的不一定是好人好事：

Charles James Fox，the noted statesman，was a notorious gambler．
