Millions of people perished in the inhumane Soviet1 prison system known as the Gulag.  Criminals and political prisoners alike suffered merciless beatings, forced labor2, and endured temperatures of 40 below zero in distant isolation3 from the rest of the world.  The Gulag disappeared with the collapse4 of the Soviet Union, but evidence has emerged of renewed prison brutality5 in today's Russia.  VOA Moscow Correspondent Peter Fedynsky has this report, which contains scenes of disturbing violence.
