The ringleader of the heist told investigators⁴ he did not think the officials would report losses to police because they were corrupt⁵. Indeed, Li did not report the alleged⁶ theft at his home. But a local official told Caixin police got involved after thegang kidnapped Xu's wife to get a key to the couple's home.
