In today's podcast, regulators announce new restrictions1 for public accounts on instant-messaging apps like WeChat.

On August 7, the official Xinhua news agency released a set of "provisional regulations" for managing instant-messaging services.

The rules target public accounts and prohibit such accounts from publishing or sharing political news unless the accountholder is a news organization, a non-news organization with an Internet news license2, or has otherwise been approved by the instant messaging service provider.

Service providers must also add annotations3 to account pages to identify public account that is authorisedto public political news.

The new regulations also require that users signing up for public accounts for the first time must providetheir real name and agree to abide4 by the "seven bottom lines," namely "laws and regulations, the socialist5 system, national interests, the legitimate6 rights and interests of citizens, public order, social morality," and authenticity7 of information.

新法规还要求首次登陆公共账号的用户要提供真实姓名，并同意遵守“七条底线”，包括法律法规、社会主义制度、国家利益、公民的合法权益、公共秩序、社会道德以及信息的真实性。”
