Lawyers have criticized a proposed legal amendment1 that addresses courtroom behavior, saying it will hurt defendants2 and amounts to a setback3 for the ruling Communist Party's stated goal of advancing the rule of law.

Han Jiayi, secretary-general of the Criminal Operations Committee of the All-China Lawyers Association, said the changes would further discourage lawyers from engaging in debates with prosecutors7 or judges, something that is already scarce in China's courtrooms.
