Hi, this is A.G. Lafley. And I would like to extend my deepest thanks to the Peter F.
DruckerAcademy in Hong Kong and Beijing for being chosen among the first Honorary DruckerFellows. I am honored and I am humbled1 to be among such distinguished2 list of honors fellowsace .
Peter Drucker continues to be a great influence on me. I did not realize it at the time but Igrow up with Peter. My father spent 25 years in management at GE and another decade in ChaseManhattan. He met Peter at GE's Crotonvile management and training facility in the 1950s andalways had Drucker's books and he studied at home. Though I had no interest in business as a highschool or undergraduate student, I would read through Drucker classic such as The EffectiveExecutive and The Practice of Management. Later, when I was in the United States navy, I grewmore interested in business, well running service and retail3 operations at US air base in Japan.
And I returned to Drucker.
I finally met Peter in person in 1999. We talked for several hours for every question I posed;Peter had one or two more things to think about. Persistently4 he urged me to choose to focus on afew wide strategies and decisions that would make a great difference for P&G. He challenged meto understand the unique leadership challenges of managing and organization of knowledgeworkers in the 21st century.
That exhilarating first conversation provided themes Peter and I returned to for the next sixyears. How to unleash5 the creativity and productivity of knowledge workers? How to create freemarkets for ideas and innovation inside and outside a company? How to build the organizationalagility and flexibility6 to respond to and to lead change? Peter's ideas have become a part of P&G.
His basic rule was the importance of serving consumers. And he likes to say the purpose of abusiness is to create and serve a customer clean and simple. At P&G we have translated thisprinciple into respect for the consumer as boss. Consumer- driven strategy , innovation andleadership are corner stones of P&G success and reflection of the influence Peter has had on meand on our company. The greatest lesson I took away is the over-arching importance of humanity. Peter believed in human possibilities and he was a force for good in world society.
Thank you for all you're doing to spread Peter's thinking and management in China. Thewell-off knowledge that Peter left us with will continue to shape business and organizationaldevelopment for generations to come. Again I would like to thank the Peter F. Drucker Academyand Bright China for this tremendous honor. I am truly grateful .
