  He's had many an unkind comment about his looks when set against the radiant beauty of girlfriend Sienna Miller.

  But Rhys Ifans seems likely to have the last laugh because psychologists reckon that happier marriages result from attractive women who wed uglier men.

  And women who marry handsome men had better watch out. Men who saw themselves as better looking than their wives were more likely to be disgruntled and have negative feelings about their marriage, experts found.

  The University of Tennessee study might also explain a few other couples such as Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas and Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller.

  The Tennessee team tested 82 newly-wed couples for facial attractiveness and the quality of their marriage.

  Their results, in the Journal of Family Psychology, suggested most men who married attractive women were happy to bask in the glory of their partner's beauty.

  But Professor Jim McNulty reported: "Men who were more attractive than their partner demonstrated a tendency to offer less emotional and practical support to their wives."

  He said "evolutionary perspectives" offered an explanation.

  Strathclyde University psychologist Alastair Ross said many men enjoyed the prestige of having a beautiful wife.

  "Men are rated as more likeable and friendly when they have a wife who is very attractive," he added.

Love's Witness

Slight unpremeditated Words are borne

By every common Wind into the Air;

Carelessly uttered, die as soon as born,

And in one instant give both Hope and Fear:

Breathing all Contraries with the same Wind

According to the Caprice of the Mind.

But Billetdoux are constant Witnesses,

Substantial Records to Eternity;

Just Evidences,who the Truth confess,

On which the Lover safely may rely;

They're serious Thoughts,digested and resolved;

And last,when Words are into Clouds devolved.

被每一次平凡的呼吸载入空气;

直至永恒的实体记录;

恋人能在其上安心依附;

它们是严肃的思想,经过深思熟虑;

Impatiently waiting

  The 12-year-old boy stood patiently beside the clock counter while the store clerk waited on all of the adult customers.

  Finally he got around to the youngster, who made his purchase and hurried out to the curb, where his father was impatiently waiting in his car.

  "What took you so long, son?" he asked.

  "The man waited on everybody in the store before me," the boy replied. "But I got even."

  "How?"

  "I wound and set all the alarm clocks while I was waiting," the youngster explained happily. "It's going to be fun at six o'clock."

The Rich Family

  I'll never forget Easter 1946. I was fourteen, my little sister, Ocy, was twelve and my older sister, Darlene, was sixteen. We lived at home with our mother, and the four of us knew what it was to do without. My dad had died five years before, leaving Mom with no money and seven school-aged kids to raise.

  By 1946, my older sisters were married and my brothers had left home. A month before Easter, the pastor of our church announced that a special holiday offering would be taken to help a poor family. He asked everyone to save and give sacrificially.

  When we got home, we talked about what we could do. We decided to buy fifty pounds of potatoes and live on them for a month. This would allow us to save twenty dollars of our grocery money for the offering. Then we thought that if we kept our electric lights turned out as much as possible and didn't listen to the radio, we'd save money on that month's electric bill. Darlene got as many house- and yard-cleaning jobs as possible, and both of us baby-sat for everyone we could. For fifteen cents we could buy enough cotton loops to make three potholders to sell for a dollar. We made twenty dollars on potholders. That month was one of the best of our lives.

  Every day we counted the money to see how much we had saved. At night we'd sit in the dark and talk about how the poor family was going to enjoy having the money the church would give them. We had about eighty people in church, so we figured that whatever amount of money we had to give, the offering would surely be twenty times that much. After all, every Sunday the pastor had reminded everyone to save for the sacrificial offering.

  The night before Easter, we were so excited we could hardly sleep. We didn't care that we wouldn't have new clothes for Easter; we had seventy dollars for the sacrificial offering. We could hardly wait to get to church! On Sunday morning, rain was pouring. We didn't own an umbrella, and the church was over a mile from our home, but it didn't seem to matter how wet we got. Darlene had cardboard in her shoes to fill the holes. The cardboard came apart, and her feet got wet.

  But we sat in church proudly. I heard some teenagers talking about our old dresses. I looked at them in their new clothes, and I felt rich.

  When the sacrificial offering was taken, we were sitting in the second row form the front. Mom put in the ten-dollar bill, and each of us kids put in a twenty-dollar bill.

  We sang all the way home from church. At lunch, Mom had a surprise for us. She had bought a dozen eggs, and we had boiled Easter eggs with our fried potatoes! Late that afternoon, the minister drove up in his car. Mom went to the door, talked with him for a moment, and then came back with an envelope in her hand. We asked what it was, but she didn't say a word. She opened the envelope and out fell a bunch of money. There were three crisp twenty-dollar bills, one ten-dollar bill and seventeen one-dollar bills.

  Mom put the money back in the envelope. We didn't talk, just sat and stared at the floor. We had gone from feeling like millionaires to feeling poor. We kids had such a happy life that we felt sorry for anyone who didn't have our Mom and our late Dad for parents and a house full of brothers and sisters and other kids visiting constantly. We thought it was fun to share silverware and see whether we got the spoon or the fork that night. We had two knives that we passed around to whoever needed them. I knew we didn't have a lot of things that other people had, but I'd never thought we were poor.

  That Easter day I found out we were. The minister had brought us the money for the poor family, so we must be poor, I thought. I didn't like being poor. I looked at my dress and worn-out shoes and felt so ashamed -- I didn't even want to go back to church. Everyone there probably already knew we were poor!

  I thought about school. I was in the ninth grade and at the top of my class of over one hundred students. I wondered if the kids at school knew that we were poor. I decided that I could quit school since I had finished the eighth grade. That was all the law required at that time.

  We sat in silence for along time. Then it got dark, and we went to bed. All that week, we girls went to school and came home, and no one talked much. Finally, on Saturday, Mom asked us what we wanted to do with the money. What did poor people do with money? We didn't know. We'd never know we were poor. We didn't want to go to church on Sunday, but Mom said we had to. Although it was a sunny day, we didn't talk on the way. Mom started to sing, but no one joined in, and she sang only one verse.

  At church we had a missionary speaker. He talked about how churches in Africa made buildings out of sun-dried bricks, but they needed money to buy roofs. He said one hundred dollars would put a roof on a church. The minister added, "Can't we all sacrifice to help these poor people?" We looked at each other and smiled for the first time in a week.

  Mom reached into her purse and pulled out the envelope. She passed it to Darlene, Darlene gave it to me, and I handed it to Ocy. Ocy put it in the offering.

  When the offering was counted, the minister announced that it was a little over one hundred dollars. The missionary was excited. He hadn't expected such a large offering form our small church. He said, "You must have some rich people in this church." Suddenly it struck us! We had given eighty-seven dollars of that "little over one hundred dollars."

  We were the rich family in the church! Hadn't the missionary said so? From that day on, I've never been poor again.

Stories behind Mother's Day

Ancient celebrations of motherhood

  People in many ancient cultures celebrated holidays honoring motherhood, personified as a goddess. Here are just a few of those:

  Ancient Greeks celebrated a holiday in honor of Rhea(Photo), the mother of the gods, including Zeus.

  Ancient Romans celebrated a holiday in honor of Cybele, a mother goddess.

  In the British Isles and Celtic Europe, the goddessBrigid(Photo), and later her successor St. Brigid, were honored with a spring Mother's Day.

  Motherhood honoured in modern times

  Mothers' Day is not celebrated on the same day throughout the world, for instance, in America Mother's Day occurs on the second Sunday in May while in Britain it is honored on the fourth Sunday in Lent(For more information on Lent, please check out Lent in "Easter's dictionary" or Carnival in "Word & Story").

** Mother's Day in Britain (March 21st, 2006 )

  Mothering Sunday was celebrated in Britain beginning in the 17th century.

  It began as a day when apprentices and servants could return home for the day to visit their mothers. Traditionally, men went home with a gift of "mothering cake" -- a kind of fruitcake or fruit-filled pastry known as simnel cake (Photo ).

** Mother's Day in America (May 14th, 2006)

  Thanks to Anna M. Jarvis, Mother's Day has become an official holiday in the United States.

  After a year when her mother died on May 9, 1905, Anna M. Jarvis attended a memorial service at their church. Inspired by the service, she thought it would be wonderful if people set aside a time to pay personal tribute to their mothers. Then, the daughter began using some of her inheritance to promote a day that would honor all mothers.

  She and others staged a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. They were successful in the end. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

  Carnation: the symbol of Mother's Day

  It was Jarvis who originated the custom of wearing a carnation on Mother's Day because carnation was her mother's favorite flower.

  A pink carnation is to honor a living mother and a white carnation is memory of a mother who passed away.

  Vocabulary:

Anna M. Jarvis:

Shares in Shanghai surged by 9.29 per cent yesterday - their biggest daily gain for six-and-a-half years - as cuts in the tax on share trading announced late on Wednesday to boost investor confidence took effect. The composite index closed 304.7 points higher at 3,583.028.

More than half of the 888 companies listed in Shanghai rose by 10 per cent, the maximum allowed by exchange rules. That suggests buyers' demand for shares may have been unsatisfied yesterday, and that the market could rise further today.

The government had been under pressure to do something to boost shares as the Shanghai Composite index more than halved in six months, disappointing retail investors who had emptied their savings accounts to buy shares for the first time.

Observers suggested that with the Olympics approaching, Beijing would prefer the stock market to be rising again as it showcases the results of its rapid economic development.

Shanghai has turned from one of the world's best performers in 2007 to one of the worst. Prices surged 141 per cent between February and October.

But during trading on Tuesday it sank to a 13-month low of 2990.79, a 51.2 per cent fall from its peak of October 16 2007.

State television said after the markets closed on Wednesday that the government would cut the stamp duty on each share trade from 0.3 to 0.1 per cent from yesterday morning. This reversed a decision in May last year, when the authorities tripled the tax to try, unsuccessfully, to cool the market.

                THE QUADROON GIRL

  THE Slaver in the broad lagoon

  Lay moored with idle sail;

  He waited for the rising moon,

  And for the evening gale.

  Under the shore his boat was tied,

  And all her listless crew

  Watched the gray alligator slide

  Into the still bayou.

  Odors of orange-flowers, and spice,

  Reached them from time to time,

  Like airs that breathe from Paradise

  Upon a world of crime.

  The Planter, under his roof of thatch,

  Smoked thoughtfully and slow;

  The Slaver's thumb was on the latch,

  He seemed in haste to go.

  He said, "My ship at anchor rides

  In yonder broad lagoon;

  I only wait the evening tides,

  And the rising of the moon."

  Before them, with her face upraised,

  In timid attitude,

  Like one half curious, half amazed,

  A Quadroon maiden stood.

  Her eyes were large, and full of light,

  Her arms and neck were bare;

  No garment she wore save a kirtle bright,

  And her own long, raven hair.

  And on her lips there played a smile

  As holy, meek, and faint,

  As lights in some cathedral aisle

  The features of a saint.

  "The soil is barren, -- the farm is old,"

  The thoughtful planter said;

  The looked upon the Slaver's gold,

  And the upon the maid.

  His heart within him was at strife

  With such accused gains:

  For he know whose passions gave her life,

  Whose blood ran in her veins.

  But the voice of nature was too weak;

  He took the glittering gold!

  Then pale as death grew the maiden's cheek,

  Her hands as icy cold.

  The Slaver led her from the door,

  He led her by the hand,

  To be his slave and paramour

  In a strange and distant land!

  宽阔的咸水湖中;

  想着心事,抽着烟;

  宽阔的咸水湖上;

  一双眼又亮又大;

        Enjoy Yourself While Fulfilling Responsibility

  In my 18 years of life, there have been many things. University days are the best part of them. I can never forget the days when I stepped into my university. I was impressed by its garden-like campus, its enthusiastic students and especially its learning atmosphere. I at once fell in love with it.

  After the arduous military training, I get absolutely absorbed in my studies. The classes given by the teachers are excellent. They provide us with information not only from our textbooks but from many other sources as well. They easily arouse my insatiable desire to take in as much as I can.

  Frankly speaking, at first I had some difficulty following the teachers. However, through my own efforts and thanks to my teachers' guidance, I made remarkable progress. Now I've benefited a lot from lectures and many other academic reports.

  Learning is a long process; I'll keep exploring in the treasure house of knowledge to enrich myself. This summer I got out of the ivory tower and entered the real world. A publishing house offered me a part-time job in compilation and revision.

  At the beginning I was belittled by my colleagues. But they were really surprised when I translated seven English articles over 5,000 words on only one day. Gradually, they began to look at me with respectful eyes. In their opinion I turned out to be a useful and trustworthy colleague.

  I also realize that only those who bring happiness for others can be truly happy. So I often take part in activities concerning public welfare. I once went to a barren mountain village with my classmates. We taught the kids there who could not afford school. While showing them how broad and how civilized the outer world is, I was deeply touched by their eagerness to learn, their honesty and their purity. I couldn't control my tears on the day when we left. The precious experience with the poor kids made me aware of the responsibility on the shoulders of us, future teachers.

  Besides study and social practice, there are entertainments as well. I do body building every day, hoping to keep healthy and energetic. We also write a play and put it on in our spare time.

  Campus life is the most splendid time. But different people have different choices. The majority of students cherish their beautiful season and cherish the hope that one day they'll become outstanding. But there are indeed some students still under ignorance. They gather together for eating, drinking or playing cards. They're busy in searching for a girlfriend or a boyfriend. They forget completely about their mission as college students and the hope of their motherland.

  Finally, I do hope everybody can try their best to become a worthy citizen of the country. I do hope everybody can become the backbone of our nation and make great contributions to society!
