China's He Chong wins men's 3m springboard diving gold medal

He Chong of China competes in the men's 3m springboard diving final at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games August 19, 2008.[Agencies]

BEIJING--China swept the first six diving gold at Beijing Olympic Games after He Chong won the men's three-meter springboard title here on Tuesday.

He, 21, ranked world No.1, led all the way to collect 572.90 points.

Canadian golden boy Alexandre Despatie, silver medallist of the event in 2004 Athens Olympics, took the silver again in 536.65, while the bronze went to Qin Kai of China in 530.10.

"I performed steadily during the final," said He, this year's World Cup winner. "I have trained hard for four years and now I proved myself."

"I was very excited in the final," he said. "But I kept telling myself to be calm.

"I especially want to thank my coach. He encouraged me when I was down."

Qin, 22, winner of the event in 2007 Melbourne World Championships, trailed Despatie in the final and tried hard to surpass him, but still failed.

"I am very very happy about my performance today," said the 23-year-old Despatie, who won the bronze in the 3m springboard synchro. "I had a extremely difficult year, coming in February to finish fifth in the World Cup, which was not the result I want. And I have a back injury.

"Before the Olympic Games, I broke my foot," said the golden boy, silver medallist in 2007 Melbourne Worlds. "I started the 3m springboard with a very poor preliminary."

Despatie has had a difficult year. He fractured his fifth metatarsal of the right foot during a training session in April this year and this hampered his training schedule toward the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

"But today I performed six solid dives together, which is unbelievable, It is very fulfilling for me to win the silver.

"I am satisfied with the bronze. I performed well, but He performed splendidly. The competitors are all quite strong."

Russian "diving czar" Dmitry Sautin, who just claimed a silver in the synchro springboard, finished fourth in 512.65.

Beijing Olympic Games is the fifth Olympic Games Sautin participated, and also his last. The Russian diving icon made an almost perfect dive in the last round as his last dive in Olympics, which scored 99.75, the highest in his six dives and also the second in the round.

Mexico's Yahel Castillo, who is the only diver who can perform 5355B, a reverse two-and-a-half somersault and two-and-a-half twist in pike position, which difficulty degree is 3.9, only managed to take the seventh in 462.10.

China expects to make a clean sweep in the Water Cube on home soil. They swept all eight golds in the last meet of the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Rome earlier in July.

From the Beijing Games, they have taken the first six gold medals.

The Chinese diving team claimed five golds at the 2000 Sydeny Olympics and a record six at the 2004 Athens Olympics, contributing more Olympic golds for China than other sports.

              A Lifetime Friendship

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison met in 1776.Could it have been any other year? They worked together starting then to further American Revolution and later to shape the new scheme of government. From the work sprang a friendship perhaps incomparable in intimacy and the trustfulness of collaboration and induration. It lasted 50 years. It included pleasure and utility but over and above them, there were shared purpose, a common end and an enduring goodness on both sides. Four and a half months before he died, when he was ailing, debt-ridden, and worried about his impoverished family, Jefferson wrote to his longtime friend. His words and Madison's reply remind us that friends are friends until death. They also remind us that sometimes a friendship has a bearing on things larger than the friendship itself, for has there ever been a friendship of greater public consequence than this one?

"The friendship which has subsisted between us now half a century, the harmony of our po1itical principles and pursuits have been sources of constant happiness to me through that long period. It's also been a great solace to me to believe that you're engaged in vindicating to posterity the course that we've pursued for preserving to them, in all their purity, their blessings of self-government, which we had assisted in acquiring for them. If ever the earth has beheld a system of administration conducted with a single and steadfast eye to the general interest and happiness of those committed to it, one which, protected by truth, can never known reproach, it is that to which our lives have been devoted. To myself you have been a pillar of support throughout life. Take care of me when dead and be assured that I should leave with you my last affections."

  A week later Madison replied---

"You cannot look back to the long period of our private friendship and political harmony with more affecting recollections than I do. If they are a source of pleasure to you, what aren't they not to be to me? We cannot be deprived of the happy consciousness of the pure devotion to the public good with Which we discharge the trust committed to us and I indulge a confidence that sufficient evidence will find in its way to another generation to ensure, after we are gone, whatever of justice may be withheld whilst we are here. "

Big Turtle

Many years ago the world had two parts.

Animals lived in the lower part, which was was completely covered in water and had no land or soil. Above was the Sky World, where the sky people lived.

The Sky World had lots of soil, with beautiful mountains and valleys. One day a girl from the Sky World went for a long walk and became very tired.

"I'm so tired, I need to rest" she said. She sat down under the spreading branches of an apple tree and quickly fell asleep.

Suddenly, there was a rumbling sound like thunder and the ground began to crack. A big hole opened up next to the apple tree.

"What's happening?" screamed the frightened girl. She tried to move but it was too late. She and the tree slid through the hole and tumbled over and over towards the watery world below.

"Help me! Help me!" screamed the girl. Luckily two swans were swimming below and saw the girl tumbling down from the sky.

"Come on!" yelled one swan. "Let's catch her before she hits the water"

"Okay!" yelled the other.

The swans spread their wings together and caught the girl on their soft feather backs.

"Whew! That was lucky" said the girl. "But what do I do now? I can't get back up to the Sky World and I can't stay on your backs forever.

"We'll take you to Big turtle" said the swans. "He knows everything".

After hearing what happened, the Big Turtle called all the animals in the water world to a meeting. He told them an old story about soil being found deep under the water.

"If we can get some of that soil, we can build an island on my back for you to live on" said the Big Turtle. "Sounds good to me" said the young girl.

The Otter, Beaver and Muskrat started arguing over who would dive for the soil.

"I'll go" said the sleek Otter, brushing his glossy fur.

"No! I'll go" said Beaver, slapping the water with his big flat tail.

"I'm the best swimmer" said Muskrat "I'll go."

"Aaaachooo!" sneezed the young girl. "Guys, guys, would just one of you go. These swan feathers are getting up my nose and making me sneeze".

  "Sorry" said the swans.

"That's alright" said the young Sky girl.

Then Toskwaye the little Toad, popped up out of the water. "I'll go. I can dive very deep" she said.

The other animals started laughing and pointing at Toskwaye. "You! You're too small and ugly to help". cried the others, laughing.

"Be quite!" said Big Turtle in a loud, stern voice. "Everyone is equal and everyone will have a chance to try".

He was gone for a long time before he came up gasping for air.

"It was too deep" he said. "I couldn't dive that far.

"Now it's my turn" said Beaver. He slapped the water with his tail as he disappeared. After a long time he came to the surface again.

"It's too far" he gasped. "No one can dive that deep."

Muskrat tried next and failed. "Aaaachoo!" sneezed the young girl. "This is not looking good"

"Now it's my turn" said little Toskwaye the Toad. She took a deep breath and jumped into the water. She was gone a very long time and everyone thought they wouldn't see her again.

Suddenly Otter pointed at the water, shouting "Look, look! Bubbles!"

Toskwaye's small, ugly face appeared through the water. She spat a few grains of soil onto the Big Turtle's back, then fell back into the water - dead. The Turtle ordered the others to rub the soil grains and spread them around on his shell. The grains grew and grew, until a large island was formed - big enough for the girl to live on.

It grew into our world as we know it today. And the descendants of the Sky girl became the Earth's people.

Today, some people say the whole world still rests on Big Turtles back. When he gets tired and changes his position, we have earthquakes.

Toad has not been forgotten either. American native Indians call her "Mashutaha", which means 'Our Grandmother'. No one is allowed to harm her.

  The End

Think Before You Speak p. 18

Sometimes we say things without thinking. Very often a thoughtless remark may hurt others' feelings or cause a misunderstanding or an embarrassment. We must, therefore, always think before we speak.

Once I told an old friend how beautiful his girlfriend looked when I saw them together at a movie theater the other day. Unfortunately, I made a mistake. It happened that she wasn't with my friend. She was with someone else. I had let the cat out of the bag, so to speak. I'd never been so embarrassed in my life. I certainly learned my lesson, but at a very high price. His girlfriend never spoke to me again! And to make matters worse, it is rumored that they eventually broke up.

halfway adv. Do not give up halfway. persistent 持久的

  look before you leap

Anyone likes Sam, because he is so thoughtful of others.

make a remark make a statement (正式)

the other day 最近几天前的一天 cinema (文诌)

  error = mistake n. mistake A for B 误将A当B

It happened that…… = It turns out that …… 原来是

let the cat out of bag = reveal the secret

Bruce is a scholar, so to speak.

  cheat on sb 对……

The Willow

              The Willow

Standing gracefully on its strong base,

          Swaying along the river bed,

          Talking to the rushing water,

The water in which it is wed.

          They stand side by side,

          As the wind rushes by,

His branches reaching down to touch his wife,

Their love is enough to make you cry.

But the water keeps on rushing by,

And now wants to move on,

          Leaving the old willow behind,

          Wishing that he had died.

          So the willow weeps,

          Every night and every day,

But the river does not care,

And simply moves on its way.

Now the willow has grown old,

          Its branches hanging down,

          But it weeps no more,

For in its place has grown a small town.

President Bush Meets with President Hu Jintao of the People's Republic of China

PRESIDENT BUSH: Mr. President, thank you very much for your time. We -- you and I have had a lot of meetings together, and I always appreciate the candid discussions on a variety of issues.

The President and I discussed Taiwan. We discussed Sudan. We discussed trade. We discussed a variety of issues. I told the President I was looking forward to coming to the Olympics. I reminded him that not only am I coming, but my wife, my mother and dad will be there, and we're looking forward to your hospitality.

And of course, in this context, I -- the President and I have constantly had discussions about human rights and political freedom. He knows my position. And as I told our people, Mr. President, I don't need the Olympics to talk candidly with somebody who I've got good relations with.

So I'm looking forward to your hospitality, and I'm really looking forward to watching the American Olympic team compete, particularly with the mighty Chinese team. And I'm hoping to get tickets for the U.S.-Chinese basketball game. If you could help me get a ticket, I'd appreciate it. (Laughter.)

  But thank you very much.

PRESIDENT HU: (As translated.) Just now, President Bush and I had a sincere and friendly meeting, and we had an in-depth exchange of views on China-U.S. relations and issues of mutual interest. We both believe that new progress has been made in China-U.S. relationship in recent years. Our two countries not only have close interactions between high-level leaders, but also between people at various other levels. Not long ago, China and United States successfully held the fourth strategic economic dialogue, which produced positive results.

In addition, our two countries have also had fruitful cooperation in economic trade, counterterrorism, energy, the environmental protection, and other areas. We also have had close communication and coordination on such major regional and international issues as the Korean nuclear issue and the Iranian nuclear issue.

To further consolidate and grow China-U.S. relationship not only serves the fundamental interests of our two countries and our two peoples, but also will have a major impact on peace, stability, and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region and in the world at large. Both President Bush and I said that we will continue to keep the larger direction of growing this constructive and cooperative relationship between us, and we will try to make efforts to ensure that this relationship will continue to grow on a sound and steady course.

I also briefed President Bush about the Chinese position on the Taiwan issue and informed President Bush about the current situation in the Taiwan Strait. We hope that the U.S. side will continue to follow the one China policy.

I welcome President Bush to Beijing to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. And I highly appreciated that President Bush has on various occasions expressed his opposition to politicizing the Olympic Games.

  Thank you, Mr. President.

  PRESIDENT BUSH: Thank you, sir.

  END 3:40 P.M. (Local)

The author's attitude towards...can be best summarized as.

The tone of this passage is best described as.

According to the passage, the author's attitude towards the early computers can best be described as.

A)indifferent B) ambiguous C) contemptuous D) hostile

A

A.positive

After careful examination of the constitutional issues involved, the mayor, responding to the people's wishes, has announced that he will take immediate action.

B negative

After hesitating for as long as he dared to, and taking refuge in the ambiguities of the constitution, the mayor has at long last yield to pressure and grudgingly agreed to try to do something.

A、B两段内容基本相同,但A对市长的态度是肯定的,因为"careful examination"表示认真负责的态度,"responding to the people's wishes","take immediate action"表示积极的态度。

而B对市长的态度是否定的,因为"hesitating for as long as"表示犹豫不决,尽量拖延,"taking refuge in"反映逃避,回避矛盾的态度,"has at long last yield to pressure","grudgingly agreed"表示采取行动是被迫的。
