Drill 1 In this part, you'll hear 5 sentences, for each sentence you hear,

there is a question waiting for you, read the quesiton carefully, and then write

Yes or No in the blanks.

Dialogue 1

Did you see the attacker?

Exercise 1 Listen to the dialogue, and choose the best answer to each quesiton you hear.

Last night, at 9:18, Mr. Snow, the director of the school, was walking from his

office to his car, when he was attacked from behind. The attacker hit Mr. Snow

on the head. The police think the attacker was a student, maybe a girl student.

The police are going to interview every student in the school. A police man

interviews Mr. Snow at the hospital.

"Now Mr. Snow, what can you remember about the attack?"

"Well, I was working late yesterday evening."

"What time did you leave your office?"

"About a quarter past nine."

"Are you sure?"

"Oh, yes, I looked my watch."

"What did you do then?"

"Well, I locked the door. Then I was walking to my car when somebody hit me

on the head."

"Did you see the attacker?"

"No, he was wearing stocking over his head."

"Tell me how did you break your leg?"

"Well, when they put me into the ambulance, they broke me."

Katherine has just left school. And she wants to find a job.

She and her mother have come to be speaking to a careers advisor2's officer.

"Come in, please take a seat."

at Careers advisor's officer

"You are Katherine, aren't you?"

"That's right. This is Katherine Hunt, and I'm her mother."

"How do you do, Mrs. Hunt?"

"Hello, Katherine."

"Hello, pleased to meet you."

"And do you like some advice about choosing career?"

"Yes, she would. Wouldn't you, Katherine?"

"Yes, please."

"Well, just let me ask you a few questions to be beginning."

"How old are you, Katherine?"

"She is 19, was she almost 19. "

"And what qualification have you got?"

"Well, qualification from school of course.

Very good result she got and she got sufficient3 for ballet and for playing the piano."

"Is that intersting, Katherine? or music

"Well..."

Ever since she was a little girl, she has been very keen4 on music and dancing.

She ought be a music teacher or something. She is quite willing to train

for a few year to get right job, aren't you, Katherine?"

"Well, if it is a good idea."

"There you are, you see. She is a good girl, really.

A bit lazy and arrogant5 sometime, but she is very bright, I'm sure the career officer

will have a lot job for you.

"Well, I am afraid it is not easy. There are many yong people these days

can't find job they want."

"I told you, Katherine, I told you you should wear that dress. You have to look

smart to get job these days."

"I think she looks very nice. Mrs. Hunt, will you come into the other office at a moment

and look some information we have there. I'm sure you like to see how we can help

young people."

"Yes, I'd love to. Mind you, I think Katherine will be a nice teacher.

She could work with young children."

"Alright. But I 'm afraid this is not the competition."
