The latest violence comes a day after angry scenes in Gaza at the funeral of an 11-year Palestinian boy. He died in a crossfire³, as Israeli soldiers fired back at Palestinian militants⁴ hurling⁵ 6)grenades at their outpost. Armed mourners fired shots into the air at the boy's funeral, as a masked man declared that Hamas had 10 suicide bombers⁶ ready to attack Israel.
In a separate incident, a 22-year-old Israeli soldier from an 7)elite undercover unit died Monday as a result of an overnight bombing near Hebron, in the West Bank. Another Israel soldier was lightly injured in the blast. A bomb exploded near their jeep as it 8)patrolled a road linking two Jewish settlements.
The latest violence threatens to derail the U.S. brokered⁷ Israeli-Palestinian cease-fire agreement, negotiated in the hope of ending almost 10 months of violence. At least 27 people have died since U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet drew up the 9)truce on June 13.
