India has eased travel 1)restrictions for visiting Pakistani nationals. India will soon issue 2)visas at border checkpoints, even along the line of control that divides disputed Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
Easing visa restrictions for Pakistani's who want to visit India will help thousands who 3)apply for Indian visas every year to visit family members. Thousands of families remain divided more than a half-century after 4)partition created the two states of India and Pakistan.
Currently, Pakistani's seeking Indian visas must travel to Islamabad to apply at the Indian High Commission. But within three months many Pakistanis will be able to obtain visas at several border 5)checkpoints along the two countries' common border.
Visas will also be issued at checkpoints along the line of control, the 1972 cease-fire line that divides the 6)territory of Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
Visa restrictions were eased by New Delhi a few days before Pakistan's President, General Pervez Musharraf, travels to India to meet with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. India Foreign Ministry2 spokeswoman Nirupama Rao says New Delhi could announce more 7)goodwill gestures before the summit begins. "This should be considered as a unilateral announcement we are making to further people-to-people contacts, and to 8)enhance goodwill," she said. "It stands by itself and is not in any way connected with other measures we may take to improve and normalize relations."
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Vajpayee met with opposition3 political leaders who have 9)voiced concern about General Musharraf's 10)insistence that the disputed territory of Kashmir be the main topic of discussion at the summit. They say the Kashmir is diverting attention away from other issues that India wants to discuss with Pakistan.
Following their meeting with the Prime Minister, opposition leaders expressed satisfaction that a range of other issues - such as cross-border terrorism, nuclear confidence-building measures, and trade will also be on the 11)agenda.
Pakistan's High Commission in New Delhi has formally invited 12)separatist political leaders in Indian Kashmir to meet General Musharraf on July 14 at the Pakistani 13)Ambassador's residence. Indian officials had 14)previously expressed their opposition to the meeting, but in recent days the foreign ministry has described it as a non-issue.
