Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid has set a 1)deadline for lawmakers to drop their impeachment1 drive against him. He is now promising2 to make good on his threat to declare a state of emergency and call new elections unless lawmakers back down on attempts to remove him by July 20.
Indonesian President Wahid says attempts by lawmakers to 2)impeach him are a threat to the nation and illegal. Mr. Wahid warns that if lawmakers try to 3)unseat him, then the nation will be in danger, Parliament will be frozen, and elections will be held a year early.
The president has made these statements before, but in a new twist Monday he set July 20 as a deadline to find a political 4)compromise.
Mr. Wahid spoke3 at a news conference, after top political leaders 5)embarrassed him by failing to turn up at a meeting he called in the town of Bogor, outside Jakarta, the capital. Among those he had asked to attend was his former ally, Vice4 President Megawati Sukarnoputri, who would replace Mr. Wahid if he is forced from office. Aides to Ms. Megawati say there was no political 6)motive behind her failure to appear at the meeting, only a conflict in scheduling. But she has repeatedly failed to attend government meetings in recent months.
President Wahid faces impeachment proceedings5 on August 1, when Indonesia's highest 7)legislative body, the People's Consultative Assembly, meets in a special session. Lawmakers who want Mr. Wahid removed from office charge that he is involved in 8)corruption6, and has 9)mismanaged the country.
Indonesia's attorney general has cleared President Wahid of all corruption 10)allegations by the country's attorney general. But allegations of erratic7 decision-making and ineffective leadership still plague Indonesia's first democratically-elected president.
