　　原文：There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had been wandering, indeed, in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning; but since dinner (Mrs. Reed, when there was no company, dined early) the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so sombre, and a rain so penetrating¹, that further out-door exercise was now out of the question.

　　译文：那天，出去散步是不可能了。其实，早上我们还在光秃秃的灌木林中溜达了一个小时，但从午饭时起（无客造访时，里德太太很早就用午饭）便刮起了冬日凛冽的寒风，随后阴云密布，大雨滂沱，室外的活动也就只能作罢了。

　　原文：I was glad of it: I never liked long walks, especially on chilly² afternoons: dreadful to me was the coming home in the raw twilight³, with nipped fingers and toes, and a heart saddened by the chidings of Bessie, the nurse, and humbled⁴ by the consciousness of my physical inferiority to Eliza, John, and Georgiana Reed.
