　　为什么一些头发是白色的？

　　One day, a little girl is sitting and watching her mother wash the dishes in the kitchen.

　　一天，一个小姑娘正站在厨房里看着妈妈洗碗碟。

　　She suddenly notices that her mother has several strands² of white hair sticking out in contrast to her brunette hair.

　　她突然注意到妈妈的一头黑发中伸出了几缕白发。

　　She looks at her mother and inquisitively³ asks, "Why are some of your hairs white, Mom?"

　　她看着妈妈好奇地问道：“妈妈，为什么你有白头发？”

　　Her mother stroked her hair and replied, "Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white."

　　妈妈摸了摸她的头发，答道：“是这样的，每一次你做了错事惹我不高兴甚至把我气哭的时候，我的一根头发就会变成白色。”

　　The little girl thought about the revelation for a while and then asked, "Mom, how come all of grandma's hairs are white?"

　　小姑娘想了一会儿后又问道：“妈妈，姥姥的头发是怎么都变白的呢？”

　　重点讲解：

　　1. a strand¹ of/strands of

　　（头发、电线或纱线等的）股，缕；

　　eg. She tried to blow a gray strand of hair from her eyes.

　　她竭力想把眼前的一缕白发吹开。

　　eg. 'The fact that you can take strands of thread and basically make something out of it, that's awesome⁴ I think,' he said.

　　“你可以将一股股的线织成一件东西，我觉得这太棒了”，他说。

　　2. in contrast to

　　与…截然不同；与…对比鲜明；

　　eg. His public statements have always been in marked contrast to those of his son.

　　他和他儿子在公开场合的言论总是截然不同。

　　eg. That is in stark⁵ contrast to the situation during the 1970 oil crisis.

　　那和1970年石油危机时的情形完全不同。

　　3. how come

　　（用于因为惊讶而询问）怎么会这样呢，为什么；

　　eg. 'They don't say a single word to each other.'—'How come?'

　　“他们相互之间一句话都不说。”——“怎么会这样呢？”

　　eg. How come he hasn't been able to be as good this year?

　　为什么他今年表现不及往常呢？
