Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to the Yasukuni shrine1 has drawn2 much criticism from South Korea. Seoul has gone so far as to call off a series of defense3 meetings and military exchanges with Japan scheduled for early next year.
Deputy defense ministers of the two East Asian neighbors held a meeting last month. The two sides agreed to facilitate exchanges between working-level officials, and to sign a memorandum4 of understanding. But after Shinzo Abe visited the Yasukuni Shrine, Seoul has canceled the signing of the MOU.
On Friday, a senior South Korean official said the government has started to reconsider its diplomatic policies towards Tokyo. A bill to condemn5 Shinzo Abe’s visit is expected to be passed in the National Assembly on Monday.
