South Korean President Park Geun-hye has proposed resuming reunions around the Lunar New Year, for families separated between South Korea and the DPRK. Park made the remarks in her first press conference since her inauguration1. She pledged to open a new era for the reunification of the Korean Peninsula.
Park said the South Korean government acknowledged DPRK’s top leader Kim Jong Un’s mention about inter-Korean relations in his New Year message. However, Park said what's important is whether the DPRK will take action rather than the promise.
Park also said that if the DPRK shows sincerity2 in realizing denuclearization, it will make a positive contribution to the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia.
Referring to the DPRK situation, the South Korean President said the country is making preparations for all possibilities.
