Extreme cold weather is freezing Canada. In Toronto, the country's largest city, temperatures have dropped to as low as minus 40 with wind-chill.

Canada experiences extreme cold.

Across the country, Canadians woke up to severe weather warnings, and "flash freeze" alerts2. In Manitoba, temperatures have been in the negative 30-40 through all the day. To the east, in Newfoundland, around 30-thousand homes were without power.

Now Toronto, like most of Canada, that's used to brutal3 winters. Beneath the streets of the downtown core, is a vast underground city of tunnels, connecting the major buildings directly to the subway system. It's like a giant shopping mall  and spares thousands of city workers from having to venture outside.

But above ground, things have been quite a challenge.

"We're Canadians, so we're pretty tough. We can handle this stuff," a resident says.

"You have to be very careful on the sidewalks and I think for older people or people who have disabilities, it can be a real problem. You have to drive slower and try to be very careful getting your car out of the parking spot or walking on the streets when you're out shopping," a resident says.

"We're not used to it and it takes a while until we get used to it. Maybe by the middle of February, everybody will have had their fill and look forward to an early spring," a resident says.

Now travel has already been a problem. Roads, railways and airports have already seen disruption4, and advice people to delay their travel plans if at all possible. That advice continuing into Tuesday as these bitter cold temperatures linger5 on until the middle of the week.
