A new study shows that air pollution in China is responsible for 350,000 to 500,000 premature1 deaths every year. The paper was published in the medical journal "Lancet" and authored by four of China's leading scientists including Chen Zhu, a former Minister of Health.

According to the report, high levels of PM2.5 particles are the fourth biggest risk factor to public health. Between 2002 and 2011, the incidence of lung cancer in Beijing nearly doubled.

Nationwide, the number of deaths from lung cancer has shot up nearly fivefold over the past 30 years.
