　　He refused to bow and scrape to the boss.

　　他不愿奉承老板。

　　bow and scrape形容弯下腰给别人擦掉鞋子上的灰尘，意喻：“点头哈腰、奉承巴结、卑躬屈膝、奴颜婢膝。”因此，当美国人说"He refused to bow and scrape to his boss."时，他/她要表达的意思就是"He didn't like to fawn¹ on his boss."、"He wouldn't like to flatter his boss."。

　　Terry: He could have said something nice to play up to the boss. How embarrassed the boss was!
