2006, insurgents¹ destroy the golden dome² of one of Iraq's holiest Shiite shrines- the Askariya mosque³ in Samarra. The blast sets off a spasm⁴ of sectarian violence in Iraq; just years after the U.S. led invasion topples Saddam Hussein from power.

1980, the 'Miracle on Ice' at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid⁵, New York, that’s where the American hockey team beats the heavily favored Soviet⁶ Union, four-to-three. ABC announcer Al Michaels: Eleven seconds, you’ve got ten seconds, the countdown going on right now...Morrow up to Silk...five seconds left in the game! Do you believe in miracle? Yes! Unbelievable!” The U.S. team later claims the gold medal by beating Finland. The Soviets⁷ take the silver.

And 1987, in New York, pop artist Andy Warhol, known for his renderings⁸ of Campbell Soup Cans, dies at the age of 58.
