Reagan and Attorney General Edwin Meese reveal profits from secret arm sales to Iran have been diverted to the Contra rebels in Nicaragua1783British forces evacuate⁴ New York, their last military position in United States during the revolutionary war.

1999Off the Florida coast, fishermen rescue Elian Gonzalez after he survived a shipwreck⁵, a trying to reach the U.S. with his mother. An international custody⁶ battle's soon enforced between Elian’s father in Cuba and the boy’s Miami relatives. The following year, the U.S. government removes Elian from those relatives and returns him to his father.

And 1914Joe DiMaggio, one of baseball’s greatest hitters and center fielders is born in Martinez, California.
