Oh, here we are Grime’s Graves in Norfolk. I’m standing³ in the middle of extremely pock-marked quilted landscape of around 450 these distinctive⁴ hollows. Each one of these represents a Neolithic flint mine. The quality of flint found in the area made it highly prized commodity and linked directly to Stonehenge. When you go to Stonehenge, a number of burrows⁵ and monuments around there have the Grimes Grave’s flint in with them. And we found completed artifacts, finished to a very high quality. And they were buried in significant places possibly as a ritual offering to the gods. It’s estimated around 18000 tons of flint were removed from Grime Graves, enough to make millions of axes. You get real sense, the mining endeavor when you look across this whole field. But to get an idea of the engineer achievement you need to go down into one of the shafts⁶. Now this particular one has been excavated⁷ out in the 19th century, so we got the opportunity to go down there and experience the same kind of environment the Neolithic miners had.
