Last time we talked about Tony in Skins. Today we’re going to meet Tony’s younger sister played by Kaya Scodelario Though she had a British upbringing, she is actually a Brazil girl and she kept learning Portuguese¹ for a long time until she can speak it rather fluently.

 

 

Her parents were divorced and Kaya was brought up by her mother. As she was bullied² in early childhood and dealt with low self esteem³, her passion for drama became an outlet⁴ for her. She decided⁵ to pursue acting⁶ at 14. It was too old for most child stars. But it’s never late for her.

 

 

Then she went to the screen test for Skins. Upon her arrival there she felt she was too young and became discouraged, but a producer stopped her and asked her to read for the part. It’s really hard to imagine a girl with no prior acting experience to get this chance, but she succeeded.

 

 

She cast in the first series of Skins in 2007 as Effy and was renowned⁷ for having very limited lines. But her performance won her popularity and gradually she became the central character in the 2009 series after the cast had been replaced with a new generation of characters.

 

 

At the same time, she also sought additional career opportunities. She joined the elite⁸ agency Models 1 and soon became the cover model for SUPERSUPER Magazine and also appeared in sci-fi thriller⁹ Moon. In addition, she appeared in the 2010 blockbuster, the Clash of the Titans

 

 

In April 2010, Kaya confirmed her casting as Cathy in a new film adaptation of Wuthering Heights .The film is slated¹⁰ to premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2011. As Skins is a rather controversial drama, it would keep us thinking whether the rebellious¹¹ teenage girl can successfully portray¹² the classical figure. It will be a contest between the new and the classic. Go and see.
